Eger Wines’ Gala – Introducing the latest releases from Nimród Kovács Winery
February 14, 2009 will mark the third Egri Borok Gálája (Eger Wines’ Gala), an annual celebration of Eger’s Top Wines, held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. Founded by Egri Borvidékért Alapítvány (Foundation for the Eger Wine Region), this year’s gala is another milestone event for the Eger Wine Region on its road to further recognition.
While the members of the 2009 Egri Borvidéki Borászválogatott (Eger Wine Region’s Winemakers’ Hall of Fame) had been selected at the end of last year, their first joint introduction will take place in the spectacular setting of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on February 14, 2009. Each year, among the numerous nominated wineries, those chosen to qualify for the hall of fame are recognized on the basis of their high-quality work and commitment to the advancement of the wine region.
Known as Monarchia Winery at the time when received the honor of becoming a member in this hall of fame, under a new name as of 2009 after its owner Nimród Kovács, former Monarchia Winery has continued to release ever more excellent wines of consistently high quality. The owner believed the time has now come to re-christen the winery after his own name to better reflect his personal dedication to superior quality, his undying passion for Eger and Hungary. Beginning this year, their new wines are now marketed under the Kovács Nimród Winery labels.
Those in attendance at the 2009 Egri Borok Gálája will have the pleasure to be among the firsts to sample the 2007 Battonage Chardonnay; 2007 Pinot Noir; 2007 Syrah and pre-order the 2005 NJK. These top wines of exceptional quality are offered at very reasonable prices vs. their value even as compared to their peers in the Hungarian and International markets.
This year’s Egri Borok Gálája (Eger Wines’ Gala) – the third such annual celebration since its foundation in 2007 - will be opened by Imre Kaló, head winemaker of Kaló Pince (Cellars). As in previous years, Mária Borbás will be the hostess of the event.
As a first-time feature, at the 2009 gala visitors will be offered nearly 30 different Bikavérs (Bull’s Blood) to sample, set up at a specially designated stand.
Where is the winemaking profession in Eger at today? What are Eger’s grand wines like at the present time and what should the furture hold for them?
Through their showcased wines, János Bolyki, Csaba Demeter, Nimród Kovács, Lajos Gál, Jr.; Tibor Gál, Attila Juhász, Imre Kaló, Tamás Sike, Zoltán Simkó, József Simon, Dr. György Lőrincz, Vilmos Thummerer, and Béla Vincze will try to answer these and all other questions asked.
This year’s second Saturday in February will mark not only one more exciting and remarkable event for the third consecutive year but also yet another opportunity for the Eger wine-region to attract the attention of wine-lovers from across the country.
